The French Connection.

John Davis and Sarah Agombar married in Bethnal Green on 21 May 1804 at St John's Hackney, London. Their first daughter Sarah was born on 8 February 1805. Their second daughter Mary Davis is the convict matriarch of our family.

John and Sarah both lived well into their 70's and 80's. They produced a large family of eleven children over 17 years.

Sarah Agombar was descended from the Huguenot refugees who fled to England in the 1680s.

When Sarah Agombar's mother died, she left each child one-sixth share of her estate. In her will, she mentions John Davis as a "victualler". Later in the 1851 census, he is described as a gentleman. John and Sarah have a servant. They may have lived in a slum area, but they had some income.

By the 1861 census, John is a retired publican.

Their daughter Mary Rachel my 3x great grandmother, was not living in abject poverty. However, her grandmother's death in 1832 may have given her parents enough income to improve their prospects. When John Davis died in 1866 he had a substantial sum of money.

Of all the children in the family, only Mary seems to have been caught and brought before the courts. Lucky for me she was.
